Spiritual Secrets of Hinduism and Spirituality
By: Darren Williger
Hinduism is a religion that stems from India and is an important part of Indian tradition. Defining Hinduism is rather difficult; but you could consider it to be a way of life that is based on the teachings of ancient sages and scriptures like Vedas and Upanishads. The best way to understand Hinduism is to compare Hinduism to a fruit tree.
In this fruit tree, you find roots that signify the Vedas and Vedantas and the thick trunk that symbolizes the experiences of numerous sages, gurus and saints. From this trunk of spiritual experiences, you find branches representing different theological traditions of Hinduism that manifests itself in different forms, shapes and sizes of the various sects and subsects of Hinduism.
Hinduism has no fixed scripture or teachings of a single prophet to follow. Neither is there any central organization like the Church of Christianity that controls all the different movements and progress of Hinduism in the world. It can be said that Hinduism is an open directory where you find many contributions from numerous selfless individuals, and can be joined or left as one wishes.
Hinduism aims at inscribing self-discovery in its followers. In addition to this, Hinduism also places importance in tolerance of other religions, spiritual paths and cultures. Hinduism follows a goal of 'Unity in Diversity' where there is no stressing for the need of conversion mentioned anyway.
Hinduism places importance to all the spiritual figures, and spirituality of the world. Hinduism sees and accepts great harmony in its teachings. However while embracing the spirituality of other cultures, you find some diversity in Hinduism as the different branches of Hinduism appeals to different people of different temperaments.
According to Hinduism, the seeker meditates and concentrates on its own deity in bhakti yoga as they believe that they reach god through these deities. There is another path in Hinduism that stresses the impersonal aspect of God to reach beyond the spirituality of Hinduism.
To the outsider, Hinduism proves to be rather confusing with the many gods and goddesses Hindus worship. However Hindu scriptures state that all these aspects and manifestations of Hinduism is of the One Supreme God of Hindu spirituality. It is this supreme god that embodies both the finite and infinite while transcending both paths and this is the spirituality that is found in Hinduism.
Hinduism has picked up many ideas while traversing its paths throughout the centuries. With these new ideas and methods, it has adapted to different cultures while remaining man's essential quest at heart. Though Hinduism may at times seem to be veering from the truth, Hinduism has retained its sanctity with the timeless messages Hinduism stands for.
All this is possible because of the great binding spirituality that exists in Hinduism. And it is within the integration of the different sects of Hinduism that you find spirituality. It is not that only the privileged few can experience spirituality and spiritual experiences of Hinduism; with the right self discipline and commitment, anyone can create a foundation of spirituality.
With spirituality, you have to question the purpose and meaning of your life. The reason you have been brought into Hinduism; this search may prove to be never ending and may seem to have no answers. However there is no one answer to this question; you just have to keep a tab on yourself throughout your life and one day, you will find the answer you were looking for.
It is possible to embark into spirituality without any firm belief or faith; all that is required is that you suspend your disbelief long enough to permit an exploration of any meaningfulness. This is possible through anything that makes you feel more alive like deep breathing, massage or yoga or through anything that reduces distractions like meditation. All this helps you attain a phase of spirituality in your life.
