All You Need to Know About Yoga Mats

By: Darren Williger

The purpose of Yoga is to exercise and achieve spiritual insight and relaxation at the same time. You can achieve this sort of exercise through a series of stretches, meditation and poses too. The end result is that you feel better both mentally and physically. One of the primary supplies that you need for the purpose of Yoga exercises is a Yoga mat. Different types of mats are available but if you’re aware of what you’re looking for you’ll be able to get the best sort of mats to satisfy your personal needs.

During Yoga you’ll be required to go through a number of stretching positions on a frequent basis, you’ll also be shifting constantly all in a bid to achieve different purposes. Before you start moving around you require a stable foundation in order to move effortlessly. This is why you need a good yoga mat, you don’t want a yoga mat that constantly slides around and which can make you fall. You should be able to maintain a good hold on the ground during your exercise. During Yoga exercise activity you’ll also sweat a lot so you need a mat that absorbs some of your sweat as you exercise. This in turn will prevent you from slipping on a mat.

The padding of the mat is something that you’ll have to decide for yourself. If you make use of extra padding you’ll have a lot more cushioning when you’re shifting from one pose to the other. You may also require extra padding if you have a physical problem or an injury. Ultimately, the length of your body will be what determines the sort of mat that you buy. The important thing is that mat should cover the entire area that body remains in when you’re completely lying down. The most common size of mat measures about 24x72 inches. Different sorts of colors exist and this is where you can be unique as well and select a color that meets with your desires.

Another option that you can get yoga mats is in non-toxic as well as bio-friendly styles. These styles will make you a whole lot safer and keep you healthy as well. The purpose of yoga is health related so it’s only natural that you’ll want a mat that has no ozone depleting substances and which is PVC free. You’ll have to start carrying your Yoga mat to classes so you’ll need a mat that is light and can be easily carried about too. You should also see that the Yoga mat that you purchase can be cleaned easily. Another thing to do is to make sure that you ask your Yoga teachers for a recommendation on Yoga mats.

Five basic types of mats exist. The cotton mat absorbs perspiration quite easily and has a cooling effect. Sticky mats are the next option and they are very useful for power yoga which involves a lot of movement. In order to promote stability you have to add a little water as it is a thin mat. Another mat is the ultra double thickness mat which provides double the cushioning of normal mats; it is a sticky mat as well. The cushioning effect is quite welcome but it makes the Yoga mat a whole lot bulkier. Travel mats tend to be quite thin and they are quite foldable too but they aren’t really comfortable due to the slim cushioning provided. If you’re constantly on the go these mats will suit you quite well, meditation mats are also a great aid as well as they can be used for relaxation and come along with a pillow.
